Motion guide, combined with Motion Tweening, is a powerful feature in Flash. It allows you to create paths along which tweened symbols (and not only) can be animated.
Look at the example of Motion Guiding:

Creating a simple Motion Guide
First of all, create a document and make the width and height at least 300 pixels. Now have a look at the timeline

1. Insert two new layers.
2. Call them appropriately (double-click it).

3. Click on frame 55 or around and hit F5 to insert frames to both layers.
4. Right-click the layer guide and choose Guide in the drop-down menu.

5. Now draw a circle or any other simple object and make sure it's on the layer object.

6. We're going to create the path now. Grab the Oval Tool and draw a nice empty circle.

7. Once you've drawn the path, our object should immediately snap to it.

8. Copy the frame on which the object is to the last frame.
9. Cut out a small gap in the circle, so that the object has to travel the longer way.

And we're done! Our SWF should like something like the one below.
